NDSM (end of) Summer School

2 to 7 October 2017 – NDSM-loods in Amsterdam

In light of the ten-year anniversary of the NDSM Art City Stichting NDSM-werf organises the NDSM (end) of Summer School. It is a one-week workshop at and about the NDSM-werf for students and (young) professionals to think about the value of the NDSM site and the importance of physical empty space and creative free havens in the city. During the intensive workshop programme, the participants will investigate how the social/cultural value (for example a variety of cultural experiences) can be set off against the economic value (for example financial profit) that can be obtained from the area, with the aim of then expressing this in words, images and through concrete interventions.

During the NDSM End of Summer School, we will work through a number of phases following a pressure cooker method. Spread over a 6-day process we will work from introduction to analysis and from research to creative output in the form of an intervention, a pamphlet, an article, a design or a visualisation. The participants will form coalitions on the basis of shared interests, within which they will work intensively over a short period towards concrete output and a closing presentation on the Saturday afternoon.

  • To allow participants to identify/depict the ‘value of empty space’ and to come up with a plan of action or intervention aimed at retaining this value, and thereby contributing to the future of the NDSM-werf and the development of the city as a whole.
  • To offer scope and support for the critical analyses and creative expressions of a new generation of artists, architects and others interested in urban themes.
  • To stimulate the social debate on the development of the city and focus attention on the NDSM-werf as a free space for everyone who is currently under pressure.
