Louvre Abu Dhabi: The new universal Museum?

The newly opened Louvre Abu Dhabi shows several hundred works of art, on loan from Paris, covering global history, next to art objects recently acquired by their rulers. The setting is spectacular: a souk-like open-air city by star architect Jean Nouvel – the message universal: we are all human beings and share basic experiences. The ambition is to show the universal, exploring the connections between widely separate civilizations through universal themes and common influences. The result is a truly universal museum. But did they succeed? And is this a new turn in museum development or are we taking a step back?

Museum directors and researchers from the Middle East will share their experiences. A short documentary will illustrate the new Louvre experience. Join the debate with Michael Huijser (director of the National Maritime Museum, Amsterdam, and former director of the visitor center Manarat Al Saadiyat), Laura Berghuis (via conference call - student at UCL Qatar University and winner of the ICOM thesis award 2015), Nat Muller (mentor of conflict at de Appel art centre) and Alexandra Bounia (via conference call - Senior Lecturer in Museum Studies UCL Qatar University)  Moderation by Imre Vegh (debat.nl) and sidekicks Lisa Bakker & Camila Miorelli (MA students Reinwardt Academy)

As usual we conclude the evening with networking drinks.
